Dance can express what words cannot, whether it's the triumphant joy in a football player's post-touchdown pirouette or the passionate tango used to notify roommates that the basement is flooding. Transmit tidings with twinkling toes thanks to today’s Groupon: for $74, you get 12 weeks of introductory belly-dance classes at Down Hips Dance Studio, taking place on Sundays beginning September 18 (a $155 value, including HST). Choose from the following class times:
• 5:00 p.m.–6:15 p.m.
• 6:45 p.m.–8:00 p.m.
• 8:15 p.m.–9:30 p.m.
At Down Hips Dance Studio, dancers of all ages and skill levels connect with music and rhythmically bend bodies during introductory belly dance classes. Experienced instructors guide pupils as they isolate different parts of the body, navigating their limbs through sensuous and Argyle dance patterns. During each 75-minute class, dancers develop stage presence, groove to music, and fine-tune technique, all while the dance moves help strengthen cores, straighten out postures, and build up muscle groups. After learning introductory concepts, students may get acquainted with other styles, including veils, Egyptian drum rhythms, and tribal fusion, a dance style that melds belly dance with traditional forms such as flamenco and modern styles such as hip-hop. Finally, the hip-swivelling professors teach an intro level piece of choreography that dancers can choose to perform or present with Venn diagrams during an optional student recital that caps off the session.
After arriving at the studio, students change into comfortable clothing, with the option to have midriffs covered or uncovered during each class. Florescent and warm track lighting illuminate hardwood floors, and sunlight spills in from large windows as students monitor moves and tickle their reflections on a full wall of mirrors. Meanwhile, a wall at the studio entrance and the option to close thick curtains ensures privacy.
