Q:

Do you use the weight loss medication that was just approved by FDA...? Don't know the name of it but it has been used in Canada for several years? RMiller

Renee C.  asked on  Jan 3, 2013

A:

The newest weight loss medication (Qsymia) is a combination of two older medications. Dr Draelos has not chosen to begin perscribing the new medication at this point due to its price, very limited pharmacy availability, and requirement for monthly pregnancy testing in female patients. He does however perscribe both of the components of the new medication in their individual forms. Dr Draelos remains up to date on issues with regard to both of the medications that the FDA has approved and is continually evaluating his use of them.

Q:

I'm interested in your easy start weight program. Is this groupon appropriate for starting that specific program or is all the initial testing not neede for this one?

susan r.  asked on  Jan 3, 2013

A:

Yes this groupon is appropriate for use with the Easy Start Program. Easy Start is one of the diet tools we use within our weight loss program. It will require an additional purchase of the medical food supplements which run about $40 per week which is only $2.80 per meal.

Q:

If i have hypothyroidism, could i get the weight loss care under my insurance instead of the full price you show? i have a $25 copay for Dr. visits. Cigna is who my insurance is with.

Sheila H.  asked on  Jan 3, 2013

A:

Unfourtunatley not. We have researched this through multiple insurance companies and have not been able to secure insurance coverage for weight loss services. While hypothyroidism impacts weight gain insurance coverage only covers services to manage the actual thyroid disease. Another challenge to the use of insurance for weight loss services is that visits are often limited to 3-4 per calendar year and can only be provided by a primary care physician. Dr. Draelos is a specialist and therefore cannot bill insurance for weight loss services. We run monthly specials and group visits into packages to make them more affordable.
