Pull your fedora down over your eyes, pop the collar of your trench, and stalk your way to an exclusive booze-running operation in River North. Today’s Groupon gives you a taste of the spirited life with two wine, beer, or spirit tasting classes at Drinks Over Dearborn for $20 (a $50 value). Squirreled away on the second floor of an office building, Drinks Over Dearborn is the height of rainy-day intrigue and Prohibition-era fun. After you’re buzzed up on a call box, you’ll ascend a narrow stairway to an elite haven of fermented beverages and knowledge. Just make sure to memorize your special Groupon password: encephalitic sequelae. No one will ask you for it, but if you forget it, they’ll know.
Your Groupon is valid for any two of Drinks Over Dearborn’s upcoming tasting classes. New classes will be added throughout the year to meet demand. October classes are busting with heady aromas and hoppy flavor:
- Blend it Like Bordeaux, October 9, 6:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m.: Discuss and taste fine Bordeaux-style reds.
- The Curious Story of Absinthe, October 14, 6:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m.: Learn the truth about this legendary spirit and discuss some of the entertaining stories surrounding absinthe. Taste different versions using a classic drip fountain.
- The Nose Knows–Tasting Beer, Wine, & Spirits, October 22, 6:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m.: Explore and taste a bouquet of boozy aromas as you investigate the effects of smell on your sense of taste.
- The Basics of Beer, October 23, 6:30 p.m.–8:00 p.m.: Trace beer to its ancient roots and learn the basic elements of different styles, tasting a variety as you go.
Each intimate class is limited to 10 spots, so you’ll have plenty of time to get to know your teacher and fellow drink enthusiasts, making valuable allies and revealing your hidden enemies. Keep an eye on Drinks Over Dearborn’s calendar for new classes and call to reserve your spot.
Master of gin-soaked happiness, Drinks Over Dearborn owner Kyle McHugh is a CMS Advance Sommelier candidate, Cicerone-certified beer server, US Bartenders Guild Advanced Bartender candidate, and creator of TheBoozehound.com. Kyle loves sharing his encyclopedic knowledge and only gets friendlier with each sip of tequila. Tough as Nails
Nails Mulaney was a hoodlum, pure and simple. Born and raised in the back alleys of Crime City, he was a street-tough from tough streets. He leaned against a dumpster to light a cigarette, but locked eyes with a scraggly old tabby who meowled at him hopefully. “Cats shouldn’t smoke,” he said, but passed it over regardless, as the haggard alley cat cooed appreciatively.
The night was young, and Nails’s trademark deck of razor-sharp playing cards weighed heavily in his pocket with the looming heft of an untold story. Which night was tonight? The night he went straight? Or the night he finally struck it big with the score of a lifetime? A pottery heist, maybe, or some kind of real estate thing. The streetlight painted his sharp features in electric beige, and he felt cold, and lucky.
