Skate the Lake's IceFest sets skaters careening across vast frozen expanses as fireworks pummel the sky to usher in the new year. Laced into personal skates, or those rented at The Evergreen Lake House ($7 additional charge; limited quantity available), guests can frolic across the icy pond, playing games of broomstick hockey or practicing Olympic-style quadruple axels. Fire-barrel bonfires warm fingertips, sleigh rides usher guests on wintry jaunts, and face-painting stations charm bright-eyed tots.
Meanwhile, on New Year's Day, brave souls put on their swimsuit or a costume and jump into icy Evergreen Lake to raise money for a cause.
In addition to delighting families and giving the pond a reason to ice over, IceFest benefits Drive Smart, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing traffic-related fatalities and injuries. 50% of proceeds from the lake plunge will also go to help benefit EPRD Special Needs/Special Olympics.
Driving through the mountains of Colorado provides breathtaking sights, but it can also be dangerous due to the elements or poor decision-making. That's where Drive Smart comes in. The non-profit transportation safety program educates teens about the importance of driving safely and smartly. Thanks to partnerships with community organizations and schools, Drive Smart helps to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities through programs such as Buckle Bear, which teaches youngsters how to buckle their seat belts properly or Teen Motor Vehicle which informs youth on safe driving and how to make smart decisions when on the road.
