For $89, today's side deal gets you 10 laps in a racecar around the Tucson Raceway Park's 3/8-mile oval short track, courtesy of DriveTech Racing School (a $199 value). No prior racing experience or skill is necessary to buckle up and melt asphalt.
With DriveTech, you'll be free to race at your own pace, experimenting with your car and the limits of physics in the process. Before you get out on the track, you'll spend about an hour in the briefing room going over the basics. Once you've been properly hyped up, you and your instructor will run around the track in a van discussing cussing and proper racing lines. After that, you're strapped in and good to go—you get five practice laps and three to five timed laps under the green flag. Your coach will be in radio contact the entire time, providing helpful feedback and cusses.
Stock-car racing is a grand American tradition, smelling, like most American traditions, of baseball players, McDonald's apple pie, and diesel fuel. Whether you choose to ride along (must be at least 10 years old) or grasp your own racetrack-based destiny by the rubbery horns, you'll find nothing but professionalism and experience from the DriveTech staff. Drivers are veterans of Busch North, and the cars—which include Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix, and more—are meticulously maintained.
Drivers must be 18, have a valid driver's license, and be able to drive a manual transmission. Being good at turning left also helps.
