DJing replaced HJing when a group of horse jockeys met resistance from their equine friends while trying to scratch and mix them together with other horses. Blend non-sentient records with today's Groupon: for $75, you get an intro to DJing workshop (a $150 value) at Dubspot on West 14th Street. Classes take place on Friday nights from 9:15 p.m. to 12 a.m. Check the schedule for class updates and availability.
One of the first Ableton Certified Training Centers in the world, Dubspot spins out digital sound technology classes including DJing, mixing and mastering, and more. The on-site group of beat blending instructors hails from all sorts of musical and educational backgrounds, with the single goal of sharing their passion for music with students. Small classes ensure personal attention in an interactive lab environment with state of the art equipment where students learn from hands-on training. The two-hour Intro DJ Workshop acquaints prospective pancake turners with the equipment and basic techniques of DJing. Students are provided with their own DJ setups and receive a basic overview of the turntable, mixer, and headphones. They're then versed in the basics of clawing and spinning vinyl records, digital DJing with Serato, beatmatching, and blending tunes. After the workshop, students will be able to drop beats and create melody webs that finally catch the goat-people that swim in their koi pond at night.
- Dubspot has a mission of building a community of novices, experts, and everywhere in between who share a common love for music and a desire to further educate themselves in the processes of its production. – Dance Tracks Digital
With bicoastal learning labs that give students complete access to mixing and sound equipment, dubspot is one of the country's foremost institutions for learning music and media technologies. The school's course list covers everything from DJing to sound design. Class sizes of 10 people or less ensure each student gets plenty of one-on-one instruction, which is fortunate since the instructors have plenty of wisdom to offer. Their ranks include a Grammy-nominated producer and a sound designer for the Oscar-winning animated film Wall-E.
Even when they're not in class, students have access to the lab facilities six days a week. Those unable to attend courses in person at the New York or LA schools can also enroll online, an option which gives them access to instructional videos for up to one year or until their computer gets old enough to move out on its own.
