Like childbirth, roller derby is an all-women’s sport that combines speed and strength, and typically ends with a doctor slapping someone to life. Take on a spectator role without worrying about the cost of diapers with today’s Groupon: for $7, you get one adult admission to the Duke City Derby bout at the Albuquerque Convention Center on August 6 (up to a $15 value). Doors open for the first match at 5:30 p.m. Seating is general admission, with kids 12 and younger admitted at no cost.
Duke City Derby couples the perilous nature of roller skates with padded and tatted ladies primed for a night of full-contact racing. Hunkered into general-admission seats in the Albuquerque Convention Center, spectators pack in for a derby double-header, as the all-star Munecas Muertas travel squad tangles with West Texas at 6 p.m., skating dexterous sine waves around them. Afterward, a round-robin bout pits the Ho-Bots, the Santa Fe Disco Brawlers, and the Derby Intelligence Agency against each other in an 8 p.m. donnybrook to determine which team has to skate the next match dressed as bumblebees. Of-age fans can celebrate victories or soothe memories of bone-snapping bashes with a beverage from the no-frills bar.
Originally formed in 2005 by 10 ambitious skaters, Duke City Derby grew into its membership in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. Four teams representing three cities compose the friction-defying commune, along with the Munecas Muertas, whose merry band of skaters seeks to earn itself another trip to the WFTD National Championship.
