Channel your mistletoe horticultural failure into romance, then reward yourself and your significant other with today's Groupon: for $19, you get two tickets (a $40 value) to the Duke City Repertory Theatre's production of Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol at The Filling Station. See sidebar for available performances.
The Duke City Repertory Theatre presents a different take on the timeless holiday tale by revealing the events that led Jacob Marley to make his bedside warning. From the mind of playwright Tom Mula, Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol fleshes out the fantastical Dickensian world with inventive additions such as Bogle, a malicious and lemon-lime flavored hell-sprite, and a cursory trip to the Mouth of Hell and the tonsils behind its pearly portcullis. This is the third medium for this award-winning work. It was also a bestselling novel and was broadcast for seven seasons as a spoken-word piece on National Public Radio.
Performances take place at The Filling Station, a 99-seat theater named for its packed houses and prior life as a 1930s gas station. This black box theater makes the proceedings more intimate, much like illuminating a meal by candlelight or playing K-Ci and JoJo at a middle-school dance, and instantly engages eyes upon entry with a large lobby decorated by local art.
