In 1815, Eliphalet Kellogg, a former Revolutionary War soldier, built a house and small cottage on his expansive property about 150 miles north of Philadelphia, intending to use the estate as a country retreat. Today, innkeeper Kathy Schloesser invites guests to explore the historical grounds and relax in the carefully preserved, antique-laden rooms. Inside the cozy main house, electric fireplaces crackle and pop in the Gilchrist, Ladd, and Roosa Rooms. The Ladd room, named after one of the inn’s intermediate owners, overlooks the landscaped backyard, where deer can often be seen rehearsing monologues for stage adaptations of Bambi. Come morning, Schloesser prepares an ever-changing breakfast from a repertoire of dishes including homemade granola with local honey, and fried eggs served over asparagus and bacon.

Lodgers can borrow a novel from the library, surf the web via complimentary WiFi, or retire to the three-season porch to marvel at the scenery or heckle hummingbirds. Nearby, visitors can peruse art and antiques galleries in the quaint town of Honesdale.
