The Issue: Obesity Among Youth in the United States
In 2008, more than one-third of children and adolescents in the United States were overweight or obese, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The same report also states that childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Obesity exposes youth to health risks such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and psychological problems. Educating students about nutrition and organic farming can empower them to make healthy and environmentally friendly decisions about what they eat.
The Campaign: Educating Students About Organic Gardening
If 32 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Earth Day New York can provide one classroom with a portable organic garden as part of its Earth Day Organic Indoor Learning Garden project. These gardens flourish in any weather, helping students who may not otherwise have access to a plot of land learn about the importance of a balanced diet and organic farming. The project also equips students with a hands-on learning environment and access to nutritional produce. Each additional $320 raised will fund a portable organic garden for another classroom.

Earth Day New York
Earth Day New York celebrates its eponymous day by sponsoring annual Earth Day events to raise support and awareness about the challenges that the planet faces. However, the organization extends its efforts year-round by partnering with schools, community organizations, and businesses to promote environmental awareness year-round, through ongoing programs such as a regular summit of student leaders in environmental-protection efforts, and a program that establishes indoor organic produce gardens in local classrooms.
