Schools across the state are cutting art classes due to budget restrictions, depriving children of what many believe is an important component of a comprehensive education. Without the arts, youth may never have the opportunity to experience a vital part of the cultural landscape, a means through which social awareness and creativity combine to produce a powerful meaning-making tool. EDIT, which stands for "equity diversity inclusion together," provides access to the arts and culture for underserved youth, promotes awareness of social justice and diversity, and encourages children to express their beliefs through art and activism.
EDIT's Awareness through Performance (ATP) program helps kids tackle vital social concerns by creating a dialogue around various issues and encouraging participants to create skits, raps, and other works of performance art exploring those topics. As part of the program, EDIT hopes to organize a field trip in which 30 underserved young people will attend a professional theater production, a trip with the potential to illuminate the function and value of the arts as a tool for social expression and growth. After the show, the kids will use lessons drawn from the experience to enhance their own performances, which focus on the issues that most affect their world, from bullying and gossip to socioeconomic concerns and racism.
Join G-Team and donate $12 to help EDIT increase students’ access to and appreciation for the arts. If G-Team members raise $360, 30 children from low-income neighborhoods will be able to attend a professional theater production and learn techniques to improve their own socially aware performance pieces. Each additional $12 raised will enable one additional student to join the field trip.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
Growing Hands Salon & Spa
When Maureen Temple was laid off from her job as an administrative assistant, she turned to her passion to create a backup plan. "I'm a people person," she says with a laugh, and she puts this self-assured sociability to good use at her new venture, Growing Hands Salon & Spa. Maureen’s clients have come to know her for more than just her friendly charm, though—her natural treatments are renowned for giving hair the nutrition it needs to grow faster, causing one satisfied customer to exclaim, "You must have growing hands!"
Those hands—green thumbs and all—get a boost from Affirm Kerahair and Moroccanoil products designed to fortify and strengthen hair naturally. Maureen and her team also care for that other kind of keratin with Shellac manicures that polish nails with CND-brand equipment and lotions. During regular manicures and pedicures, technicians draw on the vibrant colors of OPI and China Glaze products to paint nails with monochromatic hues or microscopic grocery lists. Skincare specialists and massage therapists tend to bodies in the spa’s private treatment room, exercising their powers to beautify complexions and relax tense muscles.
