Bed-bug populations have risen dramatically in recent years. It can be extremely difficult to eradicate infestations of the resilient insects, so simple prevention measures are essential for at-risk communities. Elderly citizens are at special risk for experiencing infestation, since they may face challenges with health, mobility, and completing everyday household tasks. Once the bugs begin to spread, quickly expanding insect populations can threaten the health and independence of seniors.

Elder Buddies, a project of the AARP's Legal Counsel for the Elderly, helps to safeguard the households of elderly people against bed-bug infestations by deploying youth volunteers to clean and install preventative measures. The organization equips homes with casters, a kind of netting placed in closets and under beds that traps the bugs. Volunteers also apply plastic mattress and pillow covers, and trapping strips when necessary. Though not a fail-proof solution, these measures help to protect elderly residents and their homes, in addition to stemming the infestation of communities at large.
