What You'll Get

When sensor technology for humanoid robots becomes advanced enough to systematically eliminate human life, real human beings will have an 10-mile-per-hour head start on their Segways. For $38, today's Groupon scores you a 2.5-hour Segway training and guided tour with Electric Tour Company (a $70 value). This Groupon can be used for either the day or night tour, space-permitting. Space is limited, and group rides can only accommodate six Groupon users at a time, so the bassoonist in your chamber septet will have to stay home.

By day, Electric Tour Company's guides will segue your way along the waterfront with the smell of chocolate wafting from Ghirardelli Square and spectacular views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the future headquarters of Starfleet, among other things. For a more atmospheric experience, glide by night through the lights of Fisherman's Wharf, Municipal Pier and Aquatic Park, and views of the Golden Gate Bridge (all of which are also on the day tour) while one of Electric Tour's expert guides tells you tantalizing San Francisco tales. Since the tour moves along at 10 miles per hour, you get to see much more of the city than you would if you walked. It's easy to get the hang of your Seg-legs because each Segway is equipped with high-speed microprocessors, solid-state gyroscopes, and powerful electric motors that keep you balanced, plus you get a 45- to 50-minute training session. A brand-new Segway i2 costs around $6,000, so it's a bargain to board one for $38. It'd be even better if you could commute via i2 because you would save an entire ton of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere, and the Segway carpool lane is rarely congested.

Electric Tour's Segway circuits, which depart from the rear parking lot at 757 Beach Street, are the fourth-most popular thing to do in San Francisco on TripAdvisor. From April until October, day tours run daily at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 4 p.m., and night tours run at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday nights; from November through March, day tours are at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and night tours depart at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings. Call a week in advance to reserve your spot; Electric Tour Company keeps the tours capped comfortably at 10 people (with a maximum of 6 spots for Groupon customers, space-permitting). Glow sticks and light-up grillz are optional and recommended for the night tour, but not included.

TripAdvisor reviewers give Electric Tour Company's Segway tours a perfect five owl eyes, and it's number 3 out of 465 attractions to do in the city. Yelpers give it an average of 4.5 stars.

  • It was a complete blast to cruise on a segway, and was a unique and fun experience and totally out of the box that everyone in my party loved... – Shelagh S., Yelp
  • The tour was sooooooooooooo FUN!...We were nervous but the staff made us feel safe and at ease while they trained us well before hitting the streets. We toured all around the Fisherman's Wharf area, through North Beach, and more. The tour length is really great - you spend a good three hours from start to finish and don't feel rushes. – RoadTripFunCA, TripAdvisor
