Without wine, homeowners would have nothing to store in their cellars except old holiday decorations and aging supervillains. Toast friends and foes alike with today's Groupon: for $19, you get two bottles of cherry wine (a $16.09 value each) and a complete wine tasting (a $6 value) at Elephant Island Orchard Wines in Naramata (a $38.18 total value, including tax and bottling fees).
Elephant Island Orchard Wines eschews the grape to concoct innovative wines from 13 other fruits. Before toting home twin bottles of 2010 Cherry—a dry red that pleasantly complements bold-flavoured meat dishes and meat-flavoured popsicles—visitors can try Elephant Island's other wine varieties during the complete tasting. Knowledgeable staff trot out a cavalcade of Elephant Island wines, including signature and special release varieties such as the currant-and-licorice-hinted 2009 Cassis, the memorable chocolate-accented Stellaport, and the wintry Fuji ice wine. Visitors can sample consulting winemaker Christine Leroux's audacious wines from within Elephant Island's unpretentious tasting room or sit and sip in an outdoor courtyard, where lazy tree shade and rustic patio furniture create an idyllic backdrop for swishing and sniffing.
Elephant Island thrives on the fruit-friendly soils of the Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley. The winery also rents out the Tree House, a fully furnished studio suite located directly above the tasting room that, besides boasting an impressive view, can accommodate up to three couples. The Tree House's 450-square-foot deck is ideal for simply enjoying wine, wistfully contemplating the view, or a round of competitive cork spitting.
