What You'll Get
Dry Needling, or needles with no medication on them, is a technique performed by physicians in the clinic to treat pain. Needles are inserted into trigger points (muscle spasms) which allows the muscle tissue to relax. The needles also cause small areas of acute (new) inflammation. The brain responds more efficiently to acute inflammation than it does chronic (older) inflammation, thus pain relief is a delayed sensation. It takes time for the muscle tissues to release and for the brain to send what it needs to help. Most experience decreased symptoms as the day progresses.
In the clinic, they only perform the procedure once weekly to prevent too much inflammation from building.
What to expect: clinic techs will gown you appropriately for the procedure. Ice for 10 - 15 minutes. Dry Needling performed and the needles remain inserted for 1 - 20 minutes.
