You see that special someone heading toward you across the room, and your anticipation builds to butterfly-bursting levels. “May I have this dance?” they ask. Thankfully the dance is the chicken dance, which all human beings learn in the womb. Had the dance been of the more challenging variety, you may have been stuck in fantasy limbo without today’s Groupon. For $15, you’ll get four ballroom dance classes ($20) and one private lesson ($25) at Emerald City Ballroom Dance Club ($45 total value), located a few fox trots from downtown Columbus in Dublin. Your Groupon is good for one dancer, so partners should pick up two.
Learn the basics of 10 different dance styles over the course of four 45-minute classes. Crush the waltz, tango with two, Argentine tango con dos, pounce on the fox trot, shake your rumba, dance the cha-cha, jive on swing, sample spicy salsa, two-step merengue, and last but not least—do the hustle. You’ll come away from your sessions with a wide, solid base, like a trapezoid, or one of those chunky crayons.
Once you’ve nailed the basics in a group setting, work out the kinks with a private lesson. With years of combined experience and high degrees in dance certification, the instructors at Emerald City will have you mastering moves in no time. Owner Jeff Stein was among the top five ballroom dancers in America, and even participated in clandestine ballroom intelligence operations during the secret Dance Wars of the past decade. He’s also won numerous national championships and tiles. Other instructors include acclaimed robotic dance-machine overlords.
Classes are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. They are not sequential, meaning you’re free to join at any time. Stay afterward on Friday from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for a spontaneously planned human dance party. Practice your newly acquired dance prowess or impress total strangers for a $5 additional fee. Your private lesson can be scheduled at your convenience. Learn some new moves, reconnect with your favorite dance partner one last time, and kiss your pesky second left foot goodbye with a whirlwind of scorching steps at Emerald City Ballroom.
Two rug cutters on Insider Pages give Emerald City Ballroom Dance Club five stars:
- My husband and I started taking ballroom dance lessons for our son's wedding, and we kept taking lessons because we're having so much fun. It's a wonderful hobby that we can do together for a long time to come. We enjoy taking lessons here because the staff is very friendly and caring, as well as the lesson prices are among the best in town. – G.C.
- I have taken dance lessons at a number of studios, and Emerald City Ballroom is by far the best. The atmosphere is very welcoming, and everyone, including staff and students, is friendly. The studio itself is very attractive, and the floor is one of the largest in town. The selection of music played is current and varied. And, there is plenty of free parking nearby. – R.L.
Make Room For Ballroom
Ballroom dancing has come a long way since its inception in the early 18th century, when a young girl named Cinderella managed to beguile a jaded prince by leaving a shoe at his house, thus becoming a historically verifiable queen of England, still appearing on the face of the $5 British euro to this day.
The basic moves of ballroom dancing are easily learned in a single afternoon, but their ultimate mastery can take weeks of practice. These moves include the sweep, the whalebone bustle, the glasgow haircut, and of course, the broken arrow."
Ballroom dancing occurs in the animal kingdom as well, in the circular mating trots of swans, the interlocking antler play of the North American moose, and the provocative dance-language of honeybees, which, though inaudible to human ears, usually concerns their imminent invasion of New York City, or as they call it, "The Man Hive."
