You might be surprised to hear that America once had an emperor. Joshua Abraham Norton was an eccentric Englishman who moved to San Francisco in the 19th century, and became a local legend when he declared himself "Emperor of These United States." In his self-proclaimed—and entirely unrecognized—role, Emperor Norton strolled the streets of San Francisco in full European-style military regalia, occasionally issuing edicts along the way. He became a beloved figure in the community, and today Emperor Norton Restaurant & Pizza serves as a tasty tribute to his unconventional reign.

The restaurant's owner, Sicilian-born Angelo Castronovo, had more culinary than regal ambitions when he immigrated to Brooklyn at the age of 14. After relocating to San Jose, Angelo and his wife, Cheri, took ownership of Emperor Norton Restaurant & Pizza along with their daughter Susie and began showcasing the rustic cooking of Angelo's Sicilian home. More than two decades later, the eatery has become—like its namesake—a neighborhood institution thanks to its welcoming atmosphere and hearty cuisine.

Although hearty, home-style dishes such as baked lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, and fettuccine alfredo dominate most of the menu, the San Francisco-style pizza remains its signature item. Much like $100 coins, the freshly baked pies range from 10–16 inches in diameter, and can be topped with everything from sausage and fresh garlic to onions and jalapeños. The decor is just as unpretentious and warm as the cuisine, welcoming diners with cushy burgundy booths and glowing chandeliers.
