What You'll Get
Flowers express sentiments that struggling poets cannot convey with their half-hearted attempts at wordplay and half-baked attempts at fireworks displays. Orate an ode through orchids and oleanders with today's Groupon: for $80, you get to take a floral design class at Epoch Floral, a Near West Side floral design firm on Hubbard. All material costs are covered with today's deal.
Under the instruction of master floral designer Mike Hines, you'll undertake the craft of floral arrangement in your choice of a wide variety of classes (Epoch Floral should be adding more classes over the duration of the Groupon). Learn the art of hand-tied arrangements, a tradition of simplicity that stems from 1800s Germany, or create a vivid tropical flower tower just in time for the invading hoard of summer. If flowers aren't your favored source of chlorophyll, try your fingers at the non-floral design class, which uses succulants, foliage, rocks, moss, and more to create a design earthy enough for your favorite local Druid. All classes begin with a tour of a floral wholesaler, where you'll have the option of purchasing additional floral elements and supplies for later personal use. Light snacks and beverages are available to nosh during class as creativity fuel. After the schooling, you'll have a one-of-a-kind creation to take home and keep for the remainder of its little lifespan.
Epoch Floral specializes in crafting the flora-based elegance that so many historical epochs have lacked, such as the Dark Ages and the soul-destroying years of the Great Tulip War, when the fields of Holland ran green with sap. The creations are unusual, off-the-beaten-horse designs created to inspire biophysical responses such as sweating and eye bulge. Master designer Mike Hines has a windmill factory's worth of experience, and spent time training in the artistic nerve centers of Rome and Amsterdam, among other parts of Europe.
While students of Epoch Floral's floral design class have not written any reviews of their experiences, seven Yelpers give the store 3.5 stars:
- He designed the flowers for my wedding and it was more perfect than I could even imagine. Everything he thought of was innovative, and he doesn't do the same idea decor twice. – KT S.
- super posh, fantastically designed place to get the wonderfully modern floral arrangements when price is no object. they only work with the best blossoms, twigs and branches. – Laila K.
- Great guys, with great taste. – Joan P.
