Monopoly inspired the first hotels, which were bright red, windowless, and frequently judo-kicked off the board after a surfeit of younger siblings' lucky dice rolls. Experience the evolution of luxury with today's Groupon: for $105, you get a one-night stay in an Equestrian King, Bamboo Queen, or Double/Double room and a hula lesson at The Equus Hotel and Marina Tower on Ala Moana Boulevard (up to a $210 value).
The recently redesigned Equus Hotel, formerly known as the Hawaii Polo Inn, is an equestrian-themed boutique property that delights stallion-smitten guests with displays of vintage island Paniolo cowboy photography and Ralph Lauren–inspired overtones. Each of the 67 guest rooms outfits patrons with soft cotton linens, flat-screen LCD HDTVs, complimentary wireless Internet access, and a Godfather tribute My Little Pony head tucked under every pillow. Splay out coral reef-style on the king-size bed in an Equestrian King room, reenact The Princess and the Poi in a Bamboo Queen room that features a four-poster queen-size bed, or make like an archipelago in a Double/Double room, replete with two startlingly soft double-bed-shaped islands. The 270-square-foot rooms are decorated to resemble the old kama'aina ranch homes from the early 1900s with a comely arrangement of dark woods and antique furniture. Some of the rooms are outfitted with balconies or lanais.
Guests are free to explore the Marina Tower, a 40-story architectural landmark that provides panoramic ocean views, or navigate the grounds' many features and diversions, such as the swimming pool, tennis court, outdoor whirlpool spa, and coconut skeet-shooting range. Leave the hotel grounds entirely to discover the nearby yacht club and beach, situated across the street. The included hula lesson is taught by Master Kupuna, who achieved her master status by being able to hula hoop while filing her taxes, and the continental breakfast subtly reminds island visitors that they are far, far away from the continent. Groupon buyers who wish to extend their stay at Equus Hotel may buy up to two of today's deal, then book additional nights for $85 plus taxes per night, or may upgrade their rooms for $20 plus taxes more, subject to availability.
- Housekeeping staff was polite and the rooms are nicely decorated, beds are comfy sheets and towels are clean, but best of all located in the center of it all across the street from the marina and beach and five min walk to the mall. – abielfinance, TripAdvisor
- The king bed was decked with luxurious linens and comfy pillows. The decor was really tasteful - granite bar area with mini fridge, neat polo-related photos, a great TV. – Emma R., Yelp, 1/13/10
