Peter and the Wolf

Peter's a brave young boy—his grandfather might say foolishly so. At their house in a forest clearing, Peter leaves the gate wide open, letting the duck that lives in the yard swim in a nearby pond. There, it attracts the attention of a little bird and a cat. The grandfather finds Peter by the water, scolds him, takes him back to the house, and locks him in the yard, warning Peter along the way of the wolves that live in the forest. No sooner has Peter's grandfather gone back inside then a hairy beast with jagged teeth spots the duck in the pond. Peter, defiantly unafraid, climbs the fence and plots with the little bird to capture the wolf by its tail.

Commissioned to cultivate musical tastes in young children, Sergei Prokofiev wrote both the story and the music for Peter and the Wolf in 1936. The task took him a mere four days to complete—the time it takes most musicians to tune their violin. Yet Prokofiev hardly cut corners. The music follows the story to add both depth and emotion to the action. Ominous chords and a dark, pulsing melody follow the wolf as it stalks the field and the talking animals, each of whom is sonically represented by a different instrument.
