In these hurried times, long romantic walks take place on segways, fireside chats are truncated text messages, and dinner gets shoveled into the shower. Return to simpler times with today’s Groupon: $10 for $20 worth of dinner fare or $5 for $10 worth of lunch fare at The Farm House in Ellerslie.
For 30 years, The Farm House has been an inviting oasis for hungry pilgrims hankering down home-comfort fare. Dinner plates at The Farm House come piled with your choice of one hefty meat dish and three homespun veggies, complete with cornbread for sopping, tea for whistle-whetting, and a final course of fine cakes, all made from scratch ($14.75). Entrees include chicken breast perched atop a slice of dried beef, enveloped in bacon, smothered in mushroom wine gravy, and served over rice, a dish that topped the menu for decades. Load up on Grandmother’s meatloaf, with turnip greens that turn back time and squash casseroles that see into the future. Lunch-lovers can sit back and let chicken, dumplings, and candied yams take turns square-dancing around the tongue.
Refreshingly unrushed diners can sit a spell in the flower garden, fetch a solid footstool from the furniture gift shop, and spin some yarns while the kids play with barnyard critters including Honey Bunny the rabbit and Elvis the horse. Filling up balloons with the fresh country air is highly recommended before journeying back to the suffocating city. The Farm House is open for lunch Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday for dinner from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Good southern home cooking. We will be back. Cabbage and greens were almost as good as my grandmother made when I visited the family farm in north Alabama. – Keith, Yahoo! Local
- Yummy comfort food, just like your momma made it. Great atmosphere too- my son loves to wander outside and visit with the chickens, dogs, and goat. – Jessica P., Facebook
