The Roguish Rapier, Chapter 7: “Feet First”
“Frumph.”
A warm, wet gust landed on Alexander’s face. He opened his eyes to find himself inches from the snout of a wholly unimpressed looking horse. Alexander sat up with a start, scooting away, as the horse resumed chewing on a clump of the urine- soaked straw on which it lived and also slept.
He eased himself up, sore from the unexpected feet-first plummet through the stable’s roof. He tilted his chin upward to observe the toothy hole caused by his hasty escape, and the events of the day slowly returned to his conscious memory: the duel in the garden, the mysterious old man aiding his escape from the tower, and lovely Leslie, his childhood sweetheart, betrothed to the brutish baron.
It was lucky, Alexander realized, that he had begun this adventure in such sound footwear, for all things considered, he was lucky to be alive. As if on cue, the clanking sound of men in armor approaching suggested that this respite may be but a brief stalling of his inevitable public execution.
“He’s in heah, guvnuh,” said an ill-mannered, foreign accent beyond the stable doors. Alexander’s head spun in search of a weapon, but he found only an old broom handle. He bit it in his teeth and with the learned quickness of a forest monkey, he scurried up a wooden beam, crouching in the rafters.
