Before they were used as a human fashion accessory, fig leaves were used to hide a tree's shame. For $15, today's Groupon gets you $30 worth of upscale southern-Californian fare from Figtree's Café & Grill on the Venice Beach Boardwalk. The café is open every day at 8 a.m. and closes based on the weather, usually around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. This deal cannot be combined with the 8 a.m.–9 a.m. half-price breakfast special.
While you relax on the oceanfront patio and await lunch—starting with appetizers such as skewered rosemary ahi tuna with olive tapenade ($12) or Navajo corncakes with black-bean chili, feta, avocado, and sour cream ($11)—you can marvel at the human zoo rushing by. Play "guess that person's age and social-security number," or belt out a friendly hello to a Matthew McConaughey lookalike as he jogs by unsurprisingly shirtless. Before long, the amiable, chilled-out staff will come bearing a heavy turkey bacon burger with arugula, red onion, and tomato ($13.55); or the veggie dagwood pile precariously high with zucchini, eggplant, roasted peppers, portobello mushrooms, mozzarella, and pesto on focaccia ($11.75).
Figtree's also serves up big pre-surf and post-party breakfasts, such as puffed pancakes stuffed with seasonal fruit and topped with a flurry of powdered sugar ($12); and the Olympian omelette with spinach, feta, tomatoes, and Greek olives ($12). The café also hoards a reserve of assorted organic and luxury teas (yerba mate, $3.50) and custom power potions ($4.75 each) such as the Virtual Buddha with peaches, ginseng, reishi, sweet-tea vine, and mandarin, or the depth recharger with berries and cornelian cherry.
The Los Angeles Times mentions Figtree's Café, and Time Out Los Angeles recommends it after a stroll along the beach. Citysearchers give Figtree's Café a perfect five stars, Yelpers and TripAdvisors give it 3.5, and 81% of Urbanspooners like it:
- The most delcious [sic] and well-prepared food on the OceanFront Walk. I could eat here every day! And the bonus is that you can sit and watch the Boardwalk show. The cornmeal pancakes are to die for. A reasl [sic] gem on the beach! – ralph1, Citysearch
- Great brunch menu with healthy and sinful choices...I sat out on the patio here this morning with a mimosa and thought about how lucky I am to just spend a Thursday staring at waves. – Stacey E., Yelp
