Filippo Giuffre, the man behind Zio Toto Restaurant in Brooklyn and Zio Toto in Staten Island, wanted to open a fine dining establishment with gourmet Italian food and a casual, welcoming atmosphere. Enter Fillie's, with its exposed brick walls, high-back tufted booths, and globular hanging lamps cutting a hip and low-key profile. With a wraparound bar and single flat-screen TV, the space exudes a welcoming vibe that's balanced nicely by the menu of gourmet Italian pastas and steaks.
Start with the appetizers, which range from tuna tartare to the slider trio with one mini burger, crab cake, and pulled-pork slider. Entrees touch all the bases—steaks, fish platters, and pastas. Try the chicken fra diavolo with italian sausage and garlic and onions, simmered in a tangy tomato sauce that could sweet talk its way into a zucchini garden. Or, the red snapper oreganatai, dusted with breadcrumbs and served in a white wine sauce. Ravioli dishes include ingredients like mushroom black truffle and lobster with asparagus and crab meat, and all pastas can be served gluten-free upon request.
