First Night St. Louis Festival ushers in the New Year with a bounty of festive activities and events pleasantly invading the stages and streets throughout the Grand Center District. With opening ceremonies proclaiming the commencement of the evening at 6 p.m., the festival spans the entire night with myriad programs for the entire family including a storytelling session with Bobby Norfolk, a master storyteller who entertains and educates with a diverse roster of folktales, poems, and scholarly lectures on quantum algorithms from around the world.
Bask under a light blast of pigment during an airbrush face painting or craft your own magical disguise in the artful object mask making, which allows guests to cover their visages with bright colors for a vibrant face costume. A temporary coffeehouse warms chilly fingers with mugs of steaming libations as guests meander in and out of buildings, stop to watch magicians, listen to live performances, or storm the 12-foot-high birthday cake. Those with early bedtimes can still tuck in at a responsible hour with an early dose of fireworks at 9 p.m., while night owls and adult-supervised vampires can celebrate the birth of another year with a cacophonous dose of pyrotechnics at midnight.
