A well-rounded science education involves more than just biology, chemistry, and the ability to build an orbital bombardment platform out of two paper clips and a rotary phone. Complete your training with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get tickets to a laser show and admission for two to Flandrau Science Center at The University of Arizona (up to a $20 value).
Reopened in March 2010, Flandrau educates and entertains visitors with a variety of scintillating science exhibits and shows. Parents, children, and aspiring appraisers can take a gander at precious gems and minerals gleaned from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border at the Dangerous Beauty: Minerals of the Hindu Kush exhibit before heading over to the Brain Teasers 2 installation for some cranial calisthenics. Come evening, the planetarium hosts 43-minute audio-visual presentations of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, an immersive experience set to lasers, fog, and parental nostalgia.
Flandrau is open seven days a week, but laser shows are only held Thursday–Sunday to avoid inciting a riot among the local cat population. Plan visits accordingly.
Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium
Located on the University of Arizona campus, Flandrau offers a fulldome projection system in the planetarium theater that enables us to launch from Earth and fly to planets, moons, and asteroids. Explore hands-on science exhibits about science topics from earth to space, and marvel at the dazzling specimens in the UA Mineral Museum.
