Creativity can strike at any moment, whether you're near a canvas and brushes or beside a slumbering strongman and many rolls of toilet paper. Learn to recognize opportune moments with today's Groupon: for $20, you can attend a three-hour Women, Wine, and Whatever painting class at Fleur de ME Designs (a $45 value).
Fleur de ME oozes with creativity, peddling arts and crafts in addition to teaching artistic skills during the Women, Wine, and Whatever class. On a provided 11"x14" canvas, brush-wielders can listen to the wise words of professional artist Maria Boudreaux as they dip into the studio's paint supply to create textured depictions of elegant floral designs, serene landscapes, and coy professional wrestlers. Picassos-in-training are asked to bring a bottle of wine or an hors d'oeuvres to share with their fellow creators during the class, which takes place most Wednesdays from 6:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. Groups of five or more can call to arrange a special class time.
Boudreaux founded Fleur de ME after a mural she painted for her daughter gained notoriety among her friends and several neighborhood dogs. The studio is decked out in Boudreaux's glass and mixed-media paintings, many of which are marked by a signature fleur-de-lis symbol.
Fleur de ME Designs
Strangely enough, it was Maria Prochaska Boudreaux's baby daughter who first spread the word about her art. When her daughter was born, Maria painted a mural in her room. Friends who stopped by to see the newborn became entranced by the piece, and soon they were requesting murals in their homes, too. Maria did them one better: she opened up her own art business, where she sells her work and hosts art classes for all ages.
During these classes, she teaches students how to make textured paintings with layers of color that create 3-D ridges on the canvas. One of her more popular classes is the Women, Wine, & Whatever series, a three-hour session complete with a BYOB policy. Guests paint whatever they desire on an 11"x14" canvas while Maria provides basic instruction on brushstroke techniques and how to keep hungry raccoons away from your still-life portraits. She also hosts children's birthday parties and painting classes with set subjects, which range from stylized fleurs-de-lis to flowers, butterflies, and even crawfish.
