Fly Kalamazoo’s expert instructors teach novices how to navigate the skies inside small aircraft and earth-bound classrooms. Aerial instruction begins with a ground briefing, wherein you'll learn the basics of flight controls, navigation, surfaces, and communication with birds before taking a seat in the cockpit and taking off. Your instructor will man the radio while guiding you through basic maneuvers (turning, climbing, descending, and configuration changes) as well as aerial procedures such as the chocolate dodo. With approximately 30–40 minutes of total flight time, an introductory flight will offer just enough time to fly over Kalamazoo's 161-foot statue of Bruce Lee. Fly Kalamazoo's planes are maintained in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration and are thoroughly inspected every 100 hours of operation.
During 10 weeks of ground instruction, students will learn all the skills—from weather and regulations to aerodynamics and chart reading—to eventually take the FAA written test in preparation for private-pilot certification. Pupils will use their Kindles during class to follow along, study, and practice intimidation tactics when encountering airborne paper books. Ground-school students should note that the cost of textbooks for the Kindle are an approximate additional cost of $30, and the optional FAA test fee, administered by a third party, is $90.
