Like migrating geese, trapeze artists soar over great distances, encourage one another with honking noises, and get very uncomfortable when someone slips out of formation. Keep spirits flying high with today's Groupon: for $9, you get two section C tickets to Florida State University's Flying High Circus (up to a $26 value). This Groupon is good for the Sunday, April 10 performance at 2 p.m.
Inaugurated in 1947, the Flying High Circus holds bragging rights as one of only two collegiate circuses nationwide; current students fill the ranks as performers, costume designers, audiovisual producers, and rigging engineers. In bright primary colors and shiny metallics, the all-human cast spends two hours swinging in arching aerials from trapezes, achieving equilibrium atop precarious human towers, and juggling razor-sharp 20-page term papers. Pageantry unfolds beneath FSU's own big top, lit from within by multicolored spotlights. This spring's Around the World theme enfolds acrobats in ingenious kimono-inspired leotards with obis, sporty faux-kilt skorts, and patent-leather lederhosen.
Past seasons of the Flying High Circus have flipped and spun through Europe, Canada, the Bahamas, and the West Indies. The three-ring began as an initiative to integrate male and female students when FSU became coed, reassuring nervous scholars who would rather leap from a tightrope than shake the hand of an attractive stranger.
