What You'll Get
Self-defense skills are one of the most valuable tools in making citizen's arrests, just behind battery-operated police lights and Batmobiles. Stock metaphorical utility belts with today's Groupon: for $48, you get a four-week self-defense course (a $120 value) at Fonseca Martial Arts.
Olympic athlete John Fonseca and three-time karate world champion Elisa Au Fonseca break from traditional martial-arts training to teach four-week workshops in real-world defense strategies. Unwilling victims learn how to detect potential dangers and whether to respond with verbal confrontation or physical techniques from an array of martial-arts styles. Instruction includes how-tos on takedowns, chokes, grabs, punches, blocks, and training teacup Steven Seagals to live in purses or duffel bags. Not only will grappling grasshoppers gain fighting finesse, but they will also build self-confidence, focus, and muscular endurance through sparring sessions broken up with conditioning exercises.
Workshops begin on Tuesday, May 24, and will be limited to 30 students to provide as much individual instruction and guidance as possible. Adults', teens', and kids' classes take place at separate times on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with additional overflow sessions available on Mondays and Wednesdays. In the end, all participants come away with a certificate of completion and a fine-tuned spidey sense for impending threats and passerby flies.

About Fonseca Martial Arts
USA Karate Federation Hall of Fame honoree and four-time Panamerican Karate champion John Fonseca teams up with three-time world karate champion Elisa Au Fonseca and a cadre of talented instructors to lead their charges through martial-arts and fitness classes that strengthen minds and bodies. Though the martial-arts program mainly focuses on shotokan and shito-ryu karate, the sensei also offers judo and self-defense. Bushy-tailed neophytes start at the beginning, learning the basics of their chosen form, whereas advanced students delve into such mind-focused arenas as chi energy training and personally apologizing to every punching bag they have ever hurt.
