In golf, birdie refers to one stroke under par, whereas eagle refers to the flying carnivores players trained to swipe their opponents’ clubs. Swing through with today’s Groupon: for $99, you get four kids' Saturday golf-camp sessions at Fore Kids Golf Academy at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena (a $275 value). Classes meet in two-hour sessions—9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., or 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.—on four Saturdays, which do not have to be attended consecutively.
From the emerald valley of Brookside Golf Course's expansive practice facility, Fore Kids' Golf Academy’s staff of golf gurus teaches youngsters the very basics of on-course conquests in a fun and positive environment. In each Saturday session, prospective golfers learn and practice the basic principles of golf's pendulous swing, preparing them for life as a pro golfer, leisurely swinger, or sentient grandfather clock. Video playback helps club-toting tykes better understand their swings, and a high volume of repetitions nourishes the development of essential muscle memory. Throughout the sessions, pupils also learn the basics of chipping, putting, and etiquette guidelines, such as how to mark the ball and how to boost sports cars with a divot-repair tool. Kids without a serviceable set of clubs or modified tree branches can use clubs from Fore Kids' armory of orb-mashing equipment, and each future ace receives a T-shirt and participation trophy.
Nicholas Del Pozo at Eaton Canyon Golf Course
For over 15 years, Nick Del Pozo has been transforming golf novices into pros with his fun, thorough, and effective teaching techniques. His experience is just as astounding as his credentials, including a history as head golf coach at Westridge and at La Canada High School, where he was awarded the 2016 CIF golf coach of the year. After specializing in teaching kids through his Fore Kids Golf Academy for the past seven years, Nick is now turning his focus towards training adults from his practice facility at Eaton Canyon Golf Course. Most lessons involve both range practice and on-course play, as well as video swing analysis, which provides students with a visual aid to help them understand swing advice and identify their sand wedge’s bad side.
