If Edgar Allan Poe were alive today and decided to try his hand at opera, the results could be no more atmospheric or gripping than Buried Alive | Embedded, two one-act psychological thrillers recently commissioned by the American Lyric Theater. Inspired by Poe's "The Premature Burial," Buried Alive tells the story of Victor, a painter whose nightmares of death begin to become real. With Christopher Burchett as Victor and FWOpera Studio Artist Maren Weinberger as Elena his wife, alternating realities are juxtaposed and culminate in a final gruesome ending. Embedded is taken from Poe's The Cask of Amontillado and revolves around an aging American news anchor (Caroline Worra) being pushed out of her job by a young rival (Weinberger). Desperate, she is tricked by the notorious terrorist Montressor (Nathan Stark) into traveling to see him for an exclusive interview ... a big "get" that grabs a lot more than headlines. Presented back-to-back in one captivating experience, these two new works now make their regional premiere as a part of FWOpera's Opera Unbound series.
