In a Nutshell

Diner-style breakfast and lunch at a family-owned deli with congenial service and a relaxed atmosphere

The Fine Print

Promotional value expires Apr 30, 2013. Amount paid never expires. Limit 2 per person, may buy 1 additional as a gift. Limit 1 per table. Valid from 7am-3pm only. Merchant is solely responsible to purchasers for the care and quality of the advertised goods and services.

Making a sandwich requires only two slices of bread, filling, and an expensive machine that holds the slices of bread steady while the filling is shot in between them with some sort of air-powered hose. Go somewhere that has that apparatus with this Groupon.

$20 for $40 Worth of Casual American Breakfast and Lunch

Available from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, the menu lands squarely in diner territory. Eggs, hash-brown casserole, bread, and bacon or sausage comprise the Mercantile breakfast plate ($6.95), which can be enhanced with pancakes or french toast (+$1.50). The BLT ($8.25) contains the usual suspects, plus a smear of tomato-cream-cheese spread, whereas the Guacamento ($8.25) merges a trio of guacamole, pimento cheese, and black olives.

Franklin Mercantile Deli

Before Franklin Mercantile Deli moved into 100 Fourth Avenue North, an antique store occupied the space. Graeme and Corrie Asch and Annie and Darryl McCreary bought the property in 1999, removing dusty knick-knacks and Lincoln's prenuptial agreement to make way for homey wooden tables and wingback chairs. The opening year, Southern Living magazine profiled the owners and their early successes; it lauded the deli's "comfortable shabby-chic atmosphere" in measure with its "even more appealing" menu, which teeters on the brink of gourmet. Although sandwiches have familiar titles, many have an unexpected twist: the BLT gains an evocative flavor from a slather of sun-dried-tomato cream cheese, and the flank steak balances beefy notes with a bright basil dressing.

The restaurant dabbles in live music and is fully committed to showcasing the works of local artists. Photographs and paintings decorate the dining room, along with a few handicrafts from the founding partners—Annie slipcovered a sofa, and Graeme and Darryl built the counter and shelves.
