What You'll Get
Plants, mankind’s greatest enemy, are finally on the ropes thanks to global warming. Teach children to hunt the last nitrogen junkies by growing them in captivity with today's deal: for $10, you get $25 worth of plants, garden supplies, and more at Franklin Nursery, located in Sewickley.
Franklin Nursery is a family-owned and family-operated full-service garden center and gift shop that's been serving steaming platefuls of verdant life since 1973. The nursery specializes in shade, evergreen, and ornamental trees, all of which are grown locally on the owner's farm. In addition to dendrite-based life, choose from a wide selection of decorative shrubs (starting at $25), perennials ($10–$25), roses ($20–$30), and more. Summon talking squirrels to your garden with ceramic Witchety Woodland Tinkling Toadstools ($6–$18), decorative dollops of whimsy from Kinsman Garden Company. For the discerning, biodegradable gardener, choose from a selection of FoxFarm organic soils and fertilizers.
The garden center is housed in a red wood-frame barn with an open entrance cupped by a striped awning. It embodies the essence of secret gardens and warm soil, haunted by the ghosts of butterflies from seasons past. The gift shop is located in the owner's original family home, a solid red-brick construction lined with colorful flowers and bursting with hand-selected merchandise from both established companies and local craftsfolk. Garden decorations, colonial candles, Harney & Sons tea, and stationery are all available, waiting in their cocoons for the inevitable transformation into a Mother's Day, birthday, or wedding hummingbird. Gift stock fluctuates frequently, so call ahead if you're searching for a particular item.
