Frere de Lys
The fleur de lis has long stood as a symbol of the French monarchy. Despite its playful spin on the name—frère is French for "brother"—this Upper East Side restaurant pays homage to that symbol with clever cocktails such as the Louis XIV, a blend of gin, St. Germain, and grapefruit juice. The wine selection is what really reigns supreme, though, thanks to a 50-bottle selection that hails exclusively from the Alsace region.
Of course, all these spirits complement a considered menu of French cuisine. Le premier plats include mushroom-truffle soup and asparagus amandine; a handful of entrees change seasonally, so it's best to come back often. Tartines, a French version of the open-faced sandwich, are a specialty, layered with anything from quinoa to smoked salmon.
