At Intro to Organic City Farming workshops, students learn the basics of soil and seed selection as well as strategies for planting, preparing for the growing season, and chasing off insects. Held at Fresh City Farms' greenhouse in Downsview Park, the workshops cater to the capacities of city dwellers. After sessions, each participant receives an organic seed-starting kit and booklet. Workshops take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the following Sundays: April 14, April 28, and May 12. Classes will be capped at 20–25 students. Based on demand, Fresh City Farms may open more dates or make the following workshops available: City Dirt: Growing Food in Urban Soils, Urban Homesteading, Intro to Starting Seedlings, and Terrarium Basics.
The age-old art of growing your own delicious, garden fresh food is making a comeback with classes such as Mighty Micro Greens and Sprouts. Fun with Fermented Foods teaches students how to preserve the food they've grown, as does Canning Basics.
