A moving operatic performance is one of few events where it is appropriate to show admiration by pelting someone with thorny plants. Stretch throwing arms with today's Groupon: for $15, you get one ticket to An Opera Celebration with Met Opera star Isabel Bayrakdarian on Saturday, September 24 at 8 p.m. or Sunday, September 25, at 2:30 p.m. at the Fresno Philharmonic (up to a $76 value). Seating is distributed on a best-available basis.
In its 57th season, the Fresno Philharmonic showcases classical artists through their Masterworks 5 Series, this time featuring soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian, whose passionate pipes were featured on the Grammy Award–winning soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Maestro Theodore Kuchar conducts the concert, which treats classical connoisseurs to fully orchestrated arias such as Rossini's overture to La Gazza Ladra, selections from Bizet's Carmen Suites, and three Armenian folk songs by Khatchaturian. There will be one intermission, during which concertgoers arise from red velvet seats to procure refreshments from the concession stand or stretch their legs by showing off their forty time in the lobby.
The Fresno Philharmonic is housed in the 2,353 seat Saroyan Theatre, with an acoustically advanced, contemporary interior and an elegant lobby with solid brass doors and gleaming chandeliers that lower themselves after hours to go moonlighting as moonlight. The Fresno Philharmonic orchestra also serves the community through numerous educational outreach initiatives.
