As a celestial body, the moon is far friendlier than its daytime counterpart, boasting both a luminous beauty that won't harm retinas and a surplus of golfable surfaces. Celebrate lunar hospitality with today's Groupon: for $20, you get two tickets to Friends of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail's Moondance festival (a $40 value), an all-night outdoor festival held Friday, April 15 in the Moondance Clearing north of the Spring Street Trailhead.
Held on the eve of the Ocmulgee River's regatta boat race, Friends of the Trail's Moondance is an all-night soiree raising money for the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, middle Georgia's only riverside trail and park system. Organized by volunteers and patrons, Friends of the Trail seeks to beautify and maintain the historic nature path while increasing awareness of its educational, recreational, and spiritual opportunities. Picnic setup on the banks of the Ocmulgee begins at 5 p.m., and carnivorous campers can have meals catered or bring baskets packed to the brim with homemade goodies. Parched patrons can guzzle home-brought brews or bottle moonshine on-site, though Moondance's cash bar slings a medley of stiff spirits for less than $5 each. Perfect solo struts or entice an unaccompanied angel to frolic under the lunar light as the horn-laced swank of The Grapevine serenades the impending sunrise with toe-twirling covers of classic soul, R & B, and German rap-polka favorites.
Parking is free, so designated drivers can rest assured an army of irate parking meters won't hike their rates overnight. All proceeds benefit Friends of the Trail's attempts to extend the trail through Riverside Cemetery.
