After properly cooking a lobster, its once-brown exoskeleton turns bright red, letting chefs know that it’s both ready to serve and profoundly embarrassed for showing up without pants. Within the kitchens of Frutti Di Mare, head chef and owner Marco Barrila, a Sicily native, alchemizes locally sourced ingredients and fresh seafood into a menu of Italian standards culled from his hometown’s famous recipes. A trio of crab hush puppies ($7.99) preps stomachs for forthcoming entrees such as a plate of fish tacos ($12.59), brimming with cod tempura, vegetables, and chipotle mayo, or a grilled-chicken salad ($12). Saddle up to a spaghetti bar to round up a posse of eight sauces for spaghetti-slathering quests, or have catches of the day reared in tableside by sampling deep-sea scallops (market price) lightly fried in trans-fat- and cholesterol-free oil changed daily. Fish may be cooked to order and treated to broiling, grilling, or fake baking.

Frutti Di Mare

Chef Marco Barrila knows a thing or two about Italian-style seafood—he grew up in Messina, Sicily. More than 20 years after immigrating to the United States, he decided to open his own eatery in New York's East End, where he felt locals would appreciate the Mediterranean style of cooking he had mastered so many years before. Frutti Di Mare's menu reflects his many cooking styles: grilling, broiling, frying, and roasting. Barrila also whips up party platters of his signature fish for his customers' dinners, graduation parties, or mermaids' graduations from fins to feet.

Customer Reviews

The location is kind of weird for seafood place (it shares a shop with a subway sandwich) but the food is fresh and delicious and the staff is super friendly!
