Chefs plate plump sushi rolls & tender sashimi alongside three types of sake in fusion eatery with Mt. Fuji wall mural

The most versatile of restaurant fare, sushi rolls can be stacked to shore up a rickety table or juggled to impress a dinner date. Partake of multipurpose cuisine with today’s Groupon: for $29, you get sushi dinner for two at Fujiyama (a $66 total value). The dinner includes:

  • 10 pieces of sushi
  • 15 pieces of sashimi
  • A Golden Dragon roll
  • A sake flight with three pours per person

Chefs at a light-bedecked sushi bar shape traditional sushi and sashimi as diners taste inventive fusion fare beneath a wall mural of Fujiyama’s titular mountain peak. Patrons snatch slices of red snapper, king crab, squid, and shrimp from 15-piece sashimi platters and send 10 sushi-roll pucks hurtling toward mouths with skillful chopstick slap shots. The roe-sprinkled Golden Dragon roll jealously guards an interior treasure trove of spicy tuna, avocado, and salmon, and a sake flight wets lips with three different varieties of the rice-based libation, washing down meals more daintily than a fire hose spouting Kool-Aid.

About Fujiyama

Though rooted in traditional Japanese cooking, some of Fujiyama's dishes defies easy categorization. Chefs specialize in fusion entrees that blend South American and European-inspired dishes with Japanese flavors, such as Japanese-style filet mignon. Over the open flames of the grill, they also sear marinated kalbi short ribs, chicken skewers, and taraba gani—whole Alaskan king crab with a dressing of yuzu butter sauce.

Not all of Fujiyama's signature dishes are cooked, however. At the sushi bar, chefs bundle raw cuts of seafood and other ingredients into more than 70 sashimi and hand rolls. Many of these feature original combinations, such as tempura pumpkin and eel with banana. As if the aroma of wasabi wasn't enough, Fujiyama's interior whisks diners away to Japan with a rough-hewn rock wall, murals of mist-covered mountains, and a resident customs official.
