Q&A with Tania Woodfield, Instructor
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
You can actually feel the energy in the class. My playful and energetic personality—along with the fun music and choreography—motivates participants, and they motivate me in return. We have a real sense of community and have a lot of laughs in class. There are no mirrors, which allows participants to let loose and dance like nobody’s watching. I also interact with my participants during class to ensure they are successful and have a good time. No dance experience is necessary.
Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
When I started going to the gym, my favourite group exercise classes were the ones with the music I loved the most. I found I worked harder because I enjoyed the music and kept going back, which lead to amazing results. In my Zumba class, we bring the heart rate up and back down again to burn more calories—which is similar to how a car that drives through the city burns more fuel. Musical styles range from the upbeat rhythms of merengue and cumbia to the street sounds of reggaeton and hip hop. I also play some sassy salsa and rumba for a little attitude. This Latin-based dance fitness class is sure to get you moving.
Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy?
People get to know each other in my class and are like family. We support each other and have fun together, without judgment. Because we don't use mirrors, people can relax and have more fun because they aren't thinking about how they look. When you enjoy what you’re doing, you're more likely to commit to an exercise program. And when you commit to it, you get results: weight loss, more self-confidence, and a sense of empowerment.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
I am a certified Can-Fit Pro group fitness instructor and have been teaching Zumba for more than four years. If you can march, clap, and smile, you can participate in this class. If you are sweating and have a smile on your face, you’re doing it right. The most amazing part of my job is the people who come to my classes. I have watched them become more confident, lose weight, and feel better about themselves. I love to empower people.
