Inspired by her own daughter and a desire to ensconce family stories in snapshots, trained photographer Justyna Nielsen offers classes for aspiring shutterbugs inside Funky Monkey Photography’s studio. Two giant ostrich sculptures—composed of rusted machinery scraps and petrified pterodactyl skeletons—herald the entryway to the studio, which opens up to a bright, whitewashed exterior. Within this space, clients begin their foray into photography, whether at a beginner or intermediate level. In the Camera Basics class, Nielsen preps students for the transition from auto to manual mode with lessons on aperture, shutter speed, and light sensitivity. During Next Level sessions, attendees control all of their camera’s settings while snapping still frames. A third class permits students to click away at a child model in natural light. Nielsen recommends that patrons possess a working knowledge of their cameras in advance of this course, which emphasizes capturing aesthetic portraits without blur, red eyes, or photo-bombing NFL quarterbacks.
Class sizes average out at 5 or 6 guests with a cutoff point of 10, ensuring that scholars receive individualized advice. Lessons are typically held on Saturday afternoons and weekday evenings; click here for the current schedule.

The birth of a child is one of the most important events in a parent's life, but key moments in a baby’s first year often pass by undocumented. To relive those moments, parents must rely entirely on their memories, which are almost impossible to send as email attachments. Or they can work with Funky Monkey Photography's owner, Justyna Nielsen. Justyna uses her camera to capture what she calls birth stories: photographic narratives that showcase important first moments, such as the first time parents cradle their newborn. Additionally, she captures more memories as children grow, shooting sessions for toddlers, older kids, and the entire family.
Of course, Justyna and her focused lens can't be around for every important family event. Luckily, the expert teaches her secrets during photography classes. She can help small groups of students learn essential camera skills—such as manipulating ISO and shutter speed—as well as the best techniques for photographing kids.
