Brain food is a horrible misnomer, actually referring to various cerebellum-based jellybeans. The mind benefits much more from tapioca-infused beverages like those available with today’s Groupon. For $4, you get $8 worth of drinks and snacks at the SJSU Fusion Cafe, located across from San Jose State University.
A transformed Tapioca Express, the Fusion Cafe offers most of the same bubble teas and other hot or icy drinks as the previous occupant. Its menu offers a wide selection of “snow blends” (smoothies), icy blends, milk teas, black or green teas (available hot or iced), juices, different kinds of coffee (hot or iced), Italian sodas, and small snacks. Grab a honeydew snow blend ($2.99) and a hazelnut milk tea ($2.75) for a friend and still have enough left over to buy that cute student cramming for a pilot's license an espresso ($1.50). Other snow-blend flavors include almond, caramel, kiwi, lychee, vanilla cookie, and many more. Icy blends come in blueberry, coffee, passion fruit, and more, while milk-tea varieties include chai vanilla, lavender, Thai tea, and more. Your favorite coffee drinks are also available, from lattes and mochas to Vietnamese coffee. Add tapioca, egg pudding, sesame, or other extras for $.35 each.
All that neuron-priming caffeine helps make this tea shop a prime hangout spot for San Jose State University students. Just across the street from all those classrooms that were once above-ground fallout shelters, Fusion Cafe is an oasis of pudding in an otherwise oppressive world of non-pudding. It’s a great place to study or meet up with friends. Once your brain’s been sated with your beverage of choice, tend to your second-smartest organ, the belly, with some tasty snacks such as potstickers ($3.69) and crispy chicken ($3.99).
- Attractive interior decor, very comfortable chairs (important) and the drinks are good. I have tried every single "snow bubble" drink that they have and I would not have if they were not good. The most pleasant surprise flavor is Lychee snow bubble. – Dan M., Yahoo! Local
- Good Place To Hang Out: I love the drinks here! They are made to order, and you can always customize to your liking. – Thu, Yahoo! Local
- This is one of the better TapEx’s I’ve been to. The menu is expansive and prices are moderate. The girls have always been friendly to me and are helpful with the menu. The drinks kind of taste a little bit extra delicious here… – Jan P., Yelp
