Martial arts, like an advanced calculus book, contains many lessons that require intense concentration and may be used a means of intimidation against middle-school bullies. Bolster your knowledge of self-defense with today’s Groupon: for $20, get one month of fitness-martial-arts classes (one class/week) at Futen Dojo's Bayview location (a $60 value). This Groupon is valid for students ages 15 and older.
Futen Dojo enlightens novices on the study of kobudo, an ancient martial art of Japan. Trainer, founder, and sixth-degree black belt, Michael Coleman, shepherds pugnacious pupils in a four-week self-defense program, uniting fitness with basic defense mechanisms and effective punch lines. Students who attend classes once a week engage in more than the kicks and battle horns of self-defense; they also tighten their cores, arms, and legs with stretchy yoga exercises and whole-body conditioning. After warm-ups and yoga-enhanced stretches, each week’s lesson concentrates on core skills of kobudo, which includes topics such as "how to drop an attacker in two seconds," "how to escape common attacks and grabs," and "how to turn a flying kick into a graceful triple toe loop."
Futen Dojo students harness their chi in the serene, wood-paneled walls of the studio. Founder and sensei Michael Coleman, named a social visionary of 2010 in Shepherd Express, inspires his students to follow the tenets of the traditional warrior: compassion, sincerity, calmness in the face of adversity, and collectedness in the presence of funny faces.
