Romantic Bed and Breakfast with Original Woodwork and Gourmet Dining
Kris Demoret guesses that, as a teenager, she drove by the building that is now the Arbor Hill Inn hundreds, if not thousands of times. “I grew up three miles down the street from [the building], but I never noticed it back then. I was too busy finding the next party!” she says. Years later, however, she was looking to open a bed and breakfast with friends Laura and Mark, and the Greek Revival mansion and its “for sale” sign stood out like a beacon.
The pair jumped at the opportunity to purchase the red-brick home, which was built in 1910. After a painstaking restoration, the Arbor Hill Inn looks just as it did more than 100 years ago.
Aside from its meticulous restoration, one of the highlights of the inn is its top-notch food. Upon arrival, you'll find a plate of freshly baked cookies waiting in your room. There’s a complimentary breakfast each morning, which alternates between sweet and savory options such as stuffed french toast or basil scrambled eggs; it’s served by request until 10 a.m., because, as Kris explains, “We want our guests to enjoy the morning at their own pace.” This leisurely vibe continues into the evening, when guests can enjoy desserts such as complimentary flourless chocolate cake or chocolate mousse and raspberry sauce by the fieldstone fireplace in the common room.
The seven luxury suites covered by this Groupon are split between the main house and the guest house, which sit side by side on the 4-acre property. The Lady of the Lake suite, which is dedicated to novelist Sir Walter Scott, features a cobblestone fireplace and a whirlpool tub. Guests can start their mornings with tea or coffee in Victory Garden's sun-filled sitting room; meanwhile, the Northwoods has its own private, covered deck.
La Porte, Indiana: Casinos and Antique Shops near Lake Michigan
La Porte is located in northern Indiana, about an hour outside of Chicago. The quiet city, which was designated a Preserve America city by First Lady Michelle Obama, is home to a handful of historical sights and museums including LaPorte County Historical Society museum. It features antique pianos, hand-carved Victorian furniture, and the third most valuable weapons collection in the world—more than 850 firearms from around the world are on display, which were formerly housed at what is now Arbor Hill Inn.
There’s also a handful of charming antique shops in downtown La Porte. Bargain hunters should head to Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets, located 20 minutes west, where they’ll find discounted items from major retailers such as Burberry, J. Crew, and Michael Kors.
During the warmer months, Lake Michigan and La Porte lakes are popular for family-friendly activities such as boating, fishing, and day and evening cruises. And you can find year-round entertainment at one of the local casinos, including Blue Chip Casino, which houses a 65,000-square-foot gaming floor, five restaurants, and a premier concert and theater venue.
