The Daniel

One- or Two-Night Stay with Dining Credit at Captain Daniel Stone Inn in Maine

Give as a Gift

Four-Star 19th-Century Mansion and Gourmet Restaurant

With its clean, white façade and balustrades, the sprawling Federal-style mansion that houses the Captain Daniel Stone Inn looks every bit like a colonial statehouse. That's fitting, because back in 1819, the inn was the home of its namesake, Captain Daniel Stone, a decorated naval officer and an influential statesman in the seaside town of Brunswick. Today, the inn is working diligently to renovate the Federal House—in the meantime, the main inn, which also rests on the Stone family estate, recalls the same 19th-century elegance.

Period furnishings, dark wood accents, and a color palette of regal reds, greens, and blues in the guest rooms evoke a sense of the Inn’s history. But modern amenities abound, including flat-screen TVs and wireless Internet access. Some rooms open onto a private balcony.

The dining credit may be used at the onsite restaurant, No. 10 Water, where a seasonal menu focuses on locally sourced produce, microbrews, and seafood. The adjacent tavern broadcasts sports matchups on flat-screen TVs and hosts live bluegrass and piano music weekly.

Brunswick, Maine: Historic New England Town

About 30 miles north of Portland you’ll find Brunswick, a quintessential New England town that gets its youthful flavor from Bowdoin College—one of the top 10 liberal arts colleges according to U.S. News & World Report. There’s no shortage of enriching activities on campus, whether it’s concerts in the music hall or exhibitions at the museums. Downtown, the brick sidewalk harks back to the olden days—the town was settled in 1628—and in winter, it looks a lot like a Currier and Ives print, complete with sleigh rides and an ice-skating rink. Specialty shops and fine restaurants make it a great place for shoppers and foodies alike.

The city holds claim to a number of literary heavyweights, including Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It's also the place where Harriet Beecher Stowe penned Uncle Tom's Cabin. At the Pejepscot Museum & Research Center, you can learn more about the notable figures in Brunswick history via rotating exhibits.
