Beachfront Resort with Family-Friendly Pools & Activities

The town of Carlsbad maintains a large stretch of beach that stays relatively quiet. That is significant considering the town is tucked between San Diego and Los Angeles, whose beaches can easily get crowded. Carlsbad State Beach stretches for four miles along the Pacific Ocean, where both visitors and residents go swimming, surfing, or strolling beside the nearby rocky bluffs.

The state beach is practically the front lawn of the Carlsbad Seapointe Resort, which is situated just across the road. Here, families set up for a variety of beachy activities, checking out boogey boards, lounge chairs, sand toys, and umbrellas free of charge.

There's plenty to do beyond the beach, too. The family pool has a large spray area where tots can play around. Nearby, a skull-and-crossbones flag flutters above a sandbox playground shaped like a pirate ship. You can also play on volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts, or putt past a set of dolphin statues on a mini putting green dubbed Dolphin Golfin'.

Carlsbad Seapointe Resort also has a half-moon swimming pool and Jacuzzi designed for travelers 18 years and older. There's a steady rotation of daily activities, including pizza bingo, digital-photo scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, yoga classes, and ice-cream socials.

From select one-bedroom condos you can look out to towering palm trees, lush outdoor gardens, and views of the ocean. Each condo comes with a full kitchen; guests can also grill in the shared barbecue and patio area. There's an airy, cheerful feel to the rooms, which feature vaulted ceilings and large picture windows. Colorful paintings, flowers, and brightly hued furniture such as lime-green sofas round out the décor.

Carlsbad, CA: Quaint Coastal Town North of San Diego

An artesian well was discovered in California in 1886. After this event, the town containing the well took on the name Carlsbad, named after a health-spa village in Bohemian Europe. The discovery of the mineral spring—coupled with the arrival of the Arizona Eastern Railway a few years earlier—helped propel Carlsbad as a tourist destination. It retains a small-town feel, though; its downtown is lined with quaint shops and restaurants.

Carlsbad is also renowned as a premiere growing region for poinsettias in December and ranunculus in the spring. Each year, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch herald the arrival of spring; you can watch as 50 acres of ranunculus fields blossom into a spectacular burst of color. This season, from March 1–May 13, visitors can stroll about the grounds, admire the sea of rainbow-hued flora, and use the field as a film setting to slow motion to embrace long-lost family members.
