See Taj Mahal, Qutab Minar, and More on Tour of India’s Golden Triangle

In 1631, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was so disheartened by his wife’s death that he was moved to immortalize her beauty and their love by building the Taj Mahal. The finished monument would become one of the world’s showstoppers, a perfectly symmetrical mausoleum made entirely of sparkling white marble. Those who have been inside can attest that the interior is equally impressive, with intricate designs formed by precious stones of every color. Classic Escapes’ nine-day tour not only delves in the Taj Mahal’s splendor but also some of India’s most sacred and opulent sights set along on India's Golden Triangle route, which visits Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. View the trip overview and extended itinerary for more information.

Days 1–3: After an overnight flight, you arrive at Delhi Airport and receive transportation to a luxury hotel in Delhi’s Diplomatic Enclave, where 19th-century bungalows overlook the Yamuna River. The guided city tour kicks off with a traditional rickshaw ride through Old Delhi’s narrow paths and includes and a visit to the sprawling Red Fort, once the seat of the opulent Mughal Empire. After that, head to New Delhi, the seat of India's current government, to view the president's house and India Gate, a towering sandstone arch honoring the British Indian Army’s World War I soldiers. You’ll also visit the 240-foot Qutab Minar tower, built in the 12th century to celebrate the victory of an Islamic sultan over the last Hindu kingdom in Delhi. At the foot of the tower rests the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, India’s first mosque.

Days 4–5: The tour heads to Agra, a city known its exquisite Mughal architecture. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located here: Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri, a 16th-century city made up of red sandstone palaces and accented with reflecting pools.

Days 6–9: On the sixth day, travelers set out for Jaipur. Dubbed the "Pink City" because of the color of the plaster covering its high walls and temples, Jaipur draws visitors for the geometric harmony of its design. It's the capital of Rajasthan, a region formerly known for flaunting the wealth of kings. Today, that flamboyance can still be seen in the elaborate jewelry and vibrant fabrics displayed in the traditional markets. Highlights in Jaipur include a visit to the timeworn Amber Fort and City Palace, now partially a museum showing the old Royal Family's costumes, swords, and jewel-encrusted toothbrushes.

On the last day, you'll drive back to Delhi for a buffet dinner before transferring to the airport for the overnight return flight.
