One-Night Stay with a Bottle of Champagne at Colonial Hotel in Gardner, MA

Classic New England–Style Hotel near State Forest

At more than 2,000 feet tall, Wachusett Mountain dominates central Massachusetts’s landscape, and has long been one of the region's top destinations for hiking and climbing. The area around the summit is a designated state reservation, and channels the spirit of classic New England with its maple trees, streams, perched bog, and open fields. Colonial Hotel, located just minutes away from the reservation, similarly suggests the state's Old-World heritage with high ceilings, a grand staircase, and arching palladium windows.

The onsite Colonial Grille sticks to the hotel’s New England aesthetic with its brown-and-green color scheme, stone fireplace, and powdered wigs. Its mix of high and low tables evokes a classic pub, as does its menu of burgers, pastas, and fresh seafood. Stop in on Friday nights for the all-you-can-eat prime-rib buffet; the restaurant also hosts live entertainment and local DJs on the weekends.

Gardner, Massachusetts: New England Furniture Capital and Gateway to Outdoor Pursuits

During the 19th century, Gardner was known as Chair City, thanks to its booming furniture industry: the town's north-central Massachusetts location gave craftsmen easy access to quality timber from the surrounding forests. By 1910, there were 20 chair factories in the area, creating nearly 4 million chairs per year. Visitors today can experience Gardner's long history of woodworking by browsing the Greater Gardner Furniture Outlets, a collection of stores that specialize in locally made furniture.

Gardner is a small, secluded town, so it’s an optimal spot for a private retreat. Its chief natural asset is Crystal Lake, where a mile-long paved hiking-and-biking trail hugs the shoreline. In warmer fall weather, the lake is filled with kayakers, swimmers, and fishers. In the winter, head about 10 miles southeast to the Wachusett Mountain ski area, which has 22 trails of varying difficulty and a terrain park for snowboarders.
