Historical Italian-Style Farmhouse in Blue Ridge Mountains

Wild peacocks freely strut around the grounds at Fairview Bed & Breakfast; one can watch from a wooden rocking chair on the porch as the birds flaunt their bright feathers. Try as they might, it’s hard for the peacocks to stay the center of the attention—they’ve got to compete with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which jut out majestically into the skyline of the Virginia countryside. The bucolic setting lends to the romantic feel of Fairview’s property, as does its main building, a red-bricked Italian farmhouse that was built in 1867. Elegant decorative touches, small-town hospitality, and roaming horses and cows add to the estate’s storybook charm.

Within each of the individualistic guest rooms, antique furnishings grace burnished hardwood floors, and muted pastel accents add a subtle splash of color. In the honey-kissed Gold room, sunlight pours in from floor-to-ceiling windows, which flank a wrought-iron bed draped with a lacy canopy. The tranquil Green room's queen bed is crowned with a tufted headboard, and guests can sink into pillows piled atop an ivory divan. And to make the inn even more like home and avoid the hassle of auctioning off goldfish to the neighbors, Fairview welcomes pets to tag along with their owners on vacation.

Outdoors, guests can further admire the tree-topped mountains as they sink into a hot tub and sauna. Onsite massage therapists extend the relaxation with Swedish massages and invigorating deep-tissue treatments. Come morning, treats such as bananas foster or praline bacon are laid out in the gourmet breakfast spread, which awaits in the vintage dining room. During their stay, lodgers are also treated to wine flights to sample the fermented fruits of nearby wine country. In addition to an overview of wine appreciation and the local landscape, each tasting includes four to six varietals from France and Virginia.

Amherst, Virginia: Small-Town Charm in Virginia's Wine Country

Bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the historical town of Amherst rests in the midst of central Virginia's wine country. More than 50 wineries and vineyards dot central Virginia's foothills, and more than a dozen reside near Fairview Bed & Breakfast alone, drawing connoisseurs and lonely wheels of cheese to visit the area year-round.

Central Virginia also sports a diverse terrain; one can ride on horseback, hike along the storied Appalachian Trail, or take a scenic drive northward into the mountains to see the cascading waters of Crabtree Falls. Amherst itself exudes a countryside charm; apple orchards and antique shops pop up throughout the area.
